Excerpt from Geologic Guide to the Gas and Oil Fields of Northern California
The Editor' and the Division realize that this Bulletin violates some sound and accepted principles of editorial practich problem it has not been possible to solve satisfactorily. Names of subsurface zones and geologic units are those commonly used and well understood in each of the gas fields discussed, even though they are not always in conformity with the best recommendations of the American Commission on Stratigraphic Nomenclature. It was found impractical to re-draft all maps and charts to ensure uniform usage of geologic symbols, desirable as this might be. The Editor has made no attempt to reconcile differences of geological mapping and interpretation as expressed by different authors. This was not even considered desirable; differences in geologists' opinions have sometimes led to important discoveries. Finally, in the interest of economy, re-drafting of maps was avoided if they were already clear and legible.
