(i) A geological map is an ordinary topographical map with additional indications (boundary-lines, colours, symbols) designed to show the geological constitution and structure of the country. The geological information so presented cannot be adequately realised without constant and instinctive reference to the form of the land - surface on which the various rocks are exposed. It is therefore of the first importance to be able to read a topographical map readily; 113. To interpret at a glance the general character and details of the surface-relief as there rendered. We shall accordingly begin with some remarks under this head.
