Excerpt from A Talk About Books: Addressed Originally to the Students of the Central High School, Buffalo
So it is not, in reality, of Books that I wish to speak, but of the contents of Books. It may be well for us to think of Books in that way, as vessels - vehicles - carriers - because it leads us, I am sure, to more clearly classified ideas of them. It puts them all into one category, to begin with, as carriers in the commerce of mind with mind; which instantly suggests that there are divisions of kind in that commerce, very much as there are divisions of kind in the mercantile traffic of the world, and we proceed naturally to some proper assort ing of the mind-matter which Books are carriers for. The division we are likely to recognize first is one that separates all which we commonly describe to ourselvesa; canon A Talk About Books.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is a discussion of books and their significance in human existence. The author argues that books are more like baskets than they are vessels, as they bring various contents to the mind and have no worth of their own without these contents. The author divides all these contents into three primary categories: Knowledge of the Past, Knowledge of the Present, and Poetry. The first two are self-explanatory and comprise history, science, and a great many other fields. Poetry represents all the contents of books that appeal to the imagination and emotions, from imaginative literature to music and philosophy. The author discusses at length the importance of these contents and how they have accumulated to form the vast intellectual heritage of humanity that is entirely accessible to all of us through books, hence the metaphor of books as ships traveling across the great seas of Time.
