Excerpt from Aryan Civilization: Its Religious Origin and Its Progress, With an Account of the Religion, Laws, and Institutions, of Greece and Rome
The first edition of La Cité Antique, by Monsieur pustel DE coulanges, Historical Professor at Strasbourg, appeared in r 864, and has since been crowned by the French Academy. Perhaps no other treatise could be found more useful for educational purposes or affording a clearer insight into the Spirit of antiquity. The distinctive features of it are the use of Sanscrit for further purposes than those of philology, and a comparison of the laws and institutions of the Greeks and Romans with those of the ancient Hindoos. Greek and Roman civilization is shewn to have been based upon the worship of men's dead ancestors from which wor ship, and not so much from the right of labour, were derived the idea of property and the old laws of succession. Among the points proved is the identity of the ancient gem with the primitive family, and the revival of the patriarchal theory for at least a portion of the Aryan race. The extent to which religion pervades all Greek and Roman institutions, customs, offices, is impressed on the mind by a detailed examination.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the ancient world of the Greeks and Romans, examining their beliefs and practices that shaped their social structures and political systems. The author moves beyond the familiar mythology of the Olympian gods to explore the profound influence of a far older religion: the worship of dead ancestors and fire. He argues that this domestic worship, shared within families, served as the bedrock of ancient society. It gave rise to the institution of the family, with its rigid rules of inheritance and exaggerated paternal authority. The book examines how this worship also extended outwards, forming the gens, curia, and ultimately the city-state, demonstrating the deep connection between religious practice and political organization. Through a meticulous analysis of ancient customs, rituals, and legal systems, the author reveals how the worship of the dead shaped every aspect of life, from marriage and family structure to war and political revolutions. The book's exploration of these interwoven themes offers a powerful and compelling insight into the origins of Western civilization.
