Excerpt from Scientific Rambles Round Macclesfield
Very beautiful and rare wild flowers that are to be met with in the adjacent county of Derby, with its luxuriant Mountain Limestone valleys. As to the Ornithology and Zoology of this part of Cheshire, there is nothing uncommon, which, with few exceptions, may not be found in the surrounding counties. In the midst of an active medical practice, conducted by the author in the town of Macclesfield and its vicinity for many years, it has been his custom and pleasure (on desultory occasions, or whenever opportunities offered,) to obtain, more or less, a practical knowledge of some of the various branches of the Natural History of this part of the country. The study of the science of Geology is rather a dry subject for beginners, and the author has combined with it the Archaeology of the neigh bourhood; he flatters himself that this step may prove both agreeable and useful to students who possess a taste in that direction, for, when tracing the strata of a district, it is generally in desolate or out-of-the way places, where Archaeological remains are found to be existing, and the same remark will equally apply to the discovery of the rarer plants.
