Excerpt from Protection to Home Industry: Four Lectures Delivered in Harvard University, January, 1885
These Lectures were delivered at Harvard at the instance of the Corporation and Overseers of the University, who did me the honor to appoint me Lecturer on Protective Tariffs for the year 1884 - 5, with the duty of delivering four lectures on that subject. I desire to acknowledge the courtesy with which President Eliot and his colleagues in the Faculty permitted me to make such an arrangement as would least interfere with my duties at home, and the kindness which made my stay at Cam bridge one of the pleasantest experiences of my life. I also have to thank my colleagues in the University of Pennsylvania for their assumption of much of my work in my absence.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the complex and enduring debate between free trade and protectionism in the context of economic policy. Providing an overview of the history of protectionism from ancient to contemporary times, the author argues that protectionist policies are not only necessary to prevent harm to domestic industries but also to foster and nurture the balanced development of a nation's industries. Through the detailed examination of case studies like the English cotton industry and India's textile sector, the book demonstrates how protectionism can safeguard and stimulate nascent industries, leading to sustained economic growth and prosperity. The author concludes that protectionism remains a valid and effective tool for countries seeking to achieve economic independence and maintain a diverse and resilient industrial base.
