In the Preface to the Critical Dissertation on the Book of Job, I have endeavoured to fix the moll likely time for the admission of that Book into the canon of holy Scripture; viz. in the reign of Hezekiah, king of Judah. At which time the book of Proverbs was revised, and a new addition made to it from king Solomon's remains, by the men of Hezekiah (as they are called, Prov. xxv. I.) or certain persons commissioned by this good king for that purpose. Amongst whom we have reason to conclude that the prophet Isaiah, or some other eminent Prophet of that time, must have been admitted, and appointed to superintend, direct, and give the proper sanction to the whole; as it appears from the Scripture-history, that no book could be received into the number of those which were reputed sacred or canonical, but by a Prophetical authority.
