This book delves into the intricate political landscape of Switzerland in the mid-19th century, a period marked by intense conflict between the conservative, Catholic Sonderbund and the radical, largely Protestant majority. The author meticulously examines the historical roots of this clash, tracing its origins to the aftermath of the Napoleonic era and the resurgence of both patrician families and Ultramontane influences. The narrative unfolds through a series of letters, originally published in the *Spectator*, that offer insightful commentary on the complex dynamics between the Swiss cantons. The author explores the tensions arising from the Federal Pact of 1815, a document that, while intended to unite the cantons, inadvertently fueled discord due to its inherent ambiguities and association with an unpopular era. Central to the book's analysis is the role of religion as a political tool, wielded by both sides to galvanize support and demonize opponents. The author sheds light on how religious fervor, intertwined with political ambitions, ignited uprisings and fueled the Sonderbund's resistance to federal authority. By dissecting these events and their underlying causes, the book offers valuable insights into the enduring struggle between clerical and secular power, a conflict that continues to resonate in various forms across the globe.

Excerpt from Seven Letters on the Recent Politics of Switzerland
But the original edition had long been out of print, and it has not been without difficulty that a copy has been found to meet the demands of those who now desire to re-peruse the Letters. When it was determined to reprint them, it was deemed a fitting occasion to produce a letter addressed by the Author to M. Alexis de Tocque ville, wherein he takes a retrospective view of the closing Incidents of this internecine conflict. It finishes the story, as it were; and the reader will have the leading points more clearly fixed in his mind than they would have been left at the end of Letter VII.
