Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is a collection of three essays examining the Messianic imagery found in Virgil's works, particularly the Fourth Eclogue. The author argues that the Fourth Eclogue was a prophetic carmen sung by a water nymph during the actual birth of a child. This child was not a son of Pollio, as ancient conjecture suggested, but most likely the expected child of Octavian and Scribonia. Drawing from Jewish and Gentile sources, the author suggests the conception of a coming Golden Age was derived from a Sibylline oracle brought from the East between 64 and 47 B.C. The second essay considers the role of prophecy in Virgil's other writings, proposing that the author saw the establishment of the Roman Empire as an epoch uniquely suited to moral growth, and that it was Rome's duty to lead this development. The last essay analyzes sources informing the Fourth Eclogue to suggest Virgil may have known Jewish prophecies either directly from Isaiah or through other sources which had been influenced by it, including Greek and Roman ideas. Of interest to scholars of ancient history and literature, this book provides profound insights into the ways Messianic ideas shaped Virgil's work and highlights the depth of Virgil's engagement with the spiritual and political issues of his time.
