In November the Mohawks appeared before Fort Chambly; and, although the garrison beat them off, they could not prevent them from burning the farm houses in the neighborhood, and carrying the inmate's into captivity. The French blamed Dongan for causing this inroad. No sooner had the latter learned their suspicions than, dreading reprisals, he caused Albany to be put in a better state of defence, and retained a strong body of Indians in the neighborhood, during the winter, to cover it from an attack.
