Excerpt from Report on an Investigation of Analytical Methods for Distinguishing Between the Nitrogen of Proteids and That of the Simpler Amids or Amino-Acids, 1898
This reaction is so frequently used for the approximate determina tion of urea (carbamid), while its results with other amids have been so scantily examined and almost no facts bearing on its relation to the proteids have been recorded that a good deal of interest was felt in examining it somewhat extensively with the two classes of materials which were studied.

This book represents a significant contribution to the study of analytical methods for differentiating between protein nitrogen and that of simpler amides and amido-acids. The author, a professor of chemistry, has conducted extensive research to provide a detailed examination of the various methods used to separate these two classes of nitrogenous compounds, which are found in food materials. The book discusses the importance of distinguishing between these compounds for nutrition investigations and provides a thorough analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of each separation method. The author's findings provide valuable insights for researchers and practitioners in the field of food chemistry.
