The name Dissentient Liberals was, I believe, selected by Mr. Gladstone, in a moment of comparative moderation, as the simplest name for those former associates who have refused to follow him in his new Irish policy. Simple it certainly is, and perhaps comparatively inoffensive. But it is by no means colourless. Like many other names it has a good deal in it. It savours of authority, and of some established teaching. It assumes a standard of assent and consent from which the Dissentients have dissented. What the standard is from which they have departed is a question well worth the asking.
