Excerpt from The Relation of Political Economy to the Labor Questions
Could this spirit have been breathed through all the wonderful volumes on political economy which have been written both sides of the Atlantic, there would have been fewer works periodically published upon the causes of depressions, and upon remedies for labor difficulties.

Excerpt from The Relation of Political Economy to the Labor Questions
The following Essay constituted the first of a course of lectures upon "Phases of the Labor Question Ethically considered," which were delivered before the Lowell Institute in December, 1879. I nave used some of the thoughts, and expressions even, of this lecture in other works and upon other occasions since it was first delivered; but it is now given in full as it was delivered.
This lecture is published to meet the wishes of those who have kindly remembered it; and it is dedicated to "sober, industrious, and thrifty workingmen, and humane, large-hearted employers,... two types of men I prefer to speak to."
