Excerpt from A Text-Book for the Study of Poetry
We have remarked that our purpose was not to offer in struction in verse-making. However, though not an end in itself, as an aid to the appreciation of poetic expression, verse-making possesses Ono little value and should hold its time-honored place in the study of poetry. As some help to this, a chapter of practical detail on poetic diction with abundant illustration has been added by way of appendix.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a novel examination of poetry, focusing not on technicalities but on the fundamental ideas surrounding what constitutes poetry itself. To come to our understanding, the author begins by defining what a "beautiful" object is and how this relates to the aesthetic response to art. The author then goes on to define poetry as "the imaginative representation, through the medium of language, of true grounds for the noble emotions." This definition suggests that poetry is more than just words on a page. It is a way of expressing our deepest feelings and emotions in a beautiful and meaningful way. The book's chapters then explore four main elements of poetry: the emotional, the imaginative, the intellectual, and the expressive. The author argues that all four of these elements are essential for a poem to be considered truly poetic. A poem cannot be simply intellectual, or purely emotional. The best poems express a genuine depth of emotion and intellect, and they do so in a manner that is both imaginative and expressive. The book concludes by examining the different types of poetry, including narrative, dramatic, and lyric poetry. The author discusses the unique characteristics of each type of poetry and how the formal aspects of a poem can influence our interpretation of its meaning. Overall, this book is a valuable resource for anyone who wants to learn more about poetry. It is a clear, concise, and engaging examination of the fundamental principles of poetry and provides new insights into this timeless art form.
