Excerpt from An Introduction to English Rural History
But the outbreak of war created circumstances which produced far-reaching and rapid changes. Large numbers of agricultural workers joined the colours, and rubbed shoulders not only with men from the towns, but also with men of other lands. The world became an infinitely biggera place to them, and quite apart from the experiences they underwent on active service, the mere association of rural workers with men of other callings and other interests must have modified the whole outlook of the soldiers who came from the countryside.
