The hurried traveller in quest of the antique will hardly pause to note these interesting survivals, appreciable only to those who follow the less frequented byway. More familiar to the visitor is the politician of the coffee-shop in the capital, but the seductions of the metropolis have not yet impaired the simple character of the moun taineer, proudly independent and hospitable, temperate and of exemplary chastity, free from many of the vices with which more elaborate civilizations are familiar. Indeed the Greek peasant is the salt of the nation. To his endurance and sacrifice it was mainly due that the emancipation of his country was finally accomplished. Alert and intelligent by nature, he is capable of remarkable development in other surroundings, while in his own appropriate atmosphere he seems to have retained some portion of the ideal which finds expression in a Wealth of folk-song such as few other lands can boast, the product of the open air and the free hill-side.
