HE Life of Father Faber will be attractive to more than one class of readers. Those acquainted with himself or his writings will naturally be glad to follow his history, and to trace the growth of those powers with which they have been familiar. But his life will probably have an interest far beyond the circle of those who have thus known him. The change of religious thought in Eng land, arising from the Oxford movement of 1833, is the object of increasing attention in every part of the country; and all who wish to study its early progress will find much information in the life of one who was intimately connected with it.
Father Faber's life was divided into two parts, widely distinct in character, by his conversion to the Catholic Faith. For thirty-one years he belonged to the Church of England, and although in the course of that time his Opinions underwent considerable change, he did not withdraw from active work in her service until the moment when his connection with her was severed. Moreover, Oxford was his home for many years, and the Object of his most affectionate reverence; and most of his friends were members of the Tractarian party, of which he became one of the most zealous adherents.
