Excerpt from The Principles of Qualitative Analysis: From the Standpoint of the Theory of Electrolytic Dissociation, and the Law of Mass Action
I. Object of chemical analysis. Chemical analysis consists in the systematic treatment of a given substance or mixture with selected substances, in order to determine its Simpler components by the phenomena accompanying this treatment. When the analysis is limited to the designation of the components it is termed qualita tive, and has to do solely with the determination of their nature. On the other hand, quantitative analysis, as the name implies, deals with the amounts of the individual constituents.
