Excerpt from Reflections on the Formation and Distribution of Wealth
M. Turgot, the Author of this Essay, who, for three years held the important office of Intendant or Comptroller of the finances of France, was, without exception, one of the first political characters which the present century has produced: In the various employments of Master of Requests, Intendant of the province of Lismoges, Minister of the French marine, and Comptroller General of the finances of France, he laboured assiduously to benefit his country. This, however, is his least eulogium: his writings entitle him to a higher praise; and he there shines in the revered character of a friend of mankind.
An author who fends into the world detached pieces will seldom have the good fortune to reach that degree of celebrity which attends a more voluminous compilers although his works may at the fame time possess a greater degree of intrinsic merit. Such has been the fate of M. Turgot: his writings, being in detached pieces, are little known beyond the limits of his own country; nor even there have his countrymen paid the tribute due to his excellent productions, by collecting and publishing them together.

The author, a renowned political figure of their time, examines the evolution of economic systems, starting from a hypothetical scenario of equal land distribution and progressing through various stages of societal development. Through meticulous analysis, the author dissects the inherent differences between the "productive" class of cultivators and the "stipendiary" class of artisans, highlighting the crucial role of the former in generating wealth. The book explores different methods of land cultivation, including wage labor, slavery, and various forms of tenant farming, shedding light on their respective advantages and drawbacks. Furthermore, the author delves into the nature of capital and the role of money in facilitating commerce and the division of labor. By tracing the historical use of various forms of currency, the book illuminates the emergence of gold and silver as dominant mediums of exchange. Ultimately, this book offers profound insights into the complex dynamics underlying economic structures and the distribution of resources.
