Excerpt from Modern England
This book was meant for the French public, and aimed at giving a summary account of the evolution of a foreign nation. In submitting this translation to readers of this very country, the author begs to express his sense of diffidence in regard to the boldness of the undertakin He Wishes particularly to apologize gor the many points in his study which, on this side of the Channel, must appear more or less obvious. The general economy of the book would have been destroyed had such parts been struck out.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the two opposing yet interconnected themes of instinct and rationality that have shaped modern England. The author traces the shifts between these forces through England's history, with a focus on the 19th century. England's emergence as an industrial powerhouse led to a wave of rationalism and a belief in individual liberty, which culminated in democratic reforms. Yet, as the century progressed, a countervailing force emerged, driven by a desire for a return to the social and aesthetic values of the past. The author argues that this tension between progress and preservation continues to shape England's national identity and its place in the world.
