Excerpt from The Engineering Economics of Large Scale Desalting
There is no general economic theory on the effects from desalting. At least the case is not made here for a set of equations which describe changes in national products from de salting as compared to alternative investments. The fear is that this would not be operational at this time, because not enough research has been done on relationships between desalted water and final products to set the form of the supply and demand equations for the water sectors of national economies.
On the other hand, little can be learned from the engineer ing design studies of particular desalting plants at particular locations. The ground rules for these studies differ so greatly, and the environmental characteristics are so distinctive, that general conclusions on effects do not evolve from the particular cases.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores how desalination plants can supplement existing water sources and provides a framework for assessing their social and economic effects. It begins by discussing the need for new water supplies in regions where rainfall is scarce, then delves into the engineering and economic factors involved in constructing and operating desalination plants, with a particular focus on costs and benefits. The author proposes a method for allocating costs between water and electricity production in dual-purpose plants and discusses the concept of 'safe yield' - the minimum rate of water flow a system can provide with high probability. The book concludes by examining the potential benefits of desalination, including the value of additional water-based agricultural and industrial outputs and the indirect value from reducing salinity in existing water systems. The author argues that desalination can play a significant role in meeting future water needs, especially in arid regions, and provides a valuable framework for evaluating the costs and benefits of this technology.
