Excerpt from The Story of a Pilgrimage to Hijaz

Human nature, as interpreted in the light of this sacred verse, resolves itself into a number of active emotions of which that which has religion for its object is the strongest. This emotion or sentiment, which in religious language is synonymous with sincerity of belief or attraction towards the Deity, is present in greater or less intensity in every man. It is this emotional power which impels a human being, instinctively as it were, to perform religious ceremonies for their own sake without any special object. Religion is a necessity of the human constitution. All men in this world profess a religion of some sort or other and follow its tenets with perfect sincerity whether they appreciate the nature of those tenets or not. Even the common-place mortal whose sense of religion does not happen to be very keen cheerfully undergoes every inconvenience involved in the punctual observance of the ritual of his faith. The votaries of almost all systems of belief admit, in addition to their ordinary places of worship, the existence of one sacred shrine, pilgrimage to, and worship in, which are of pre-eminent spiritual value.
