Excerpt from The Life of the Rev. George Crabbe
The letters and extracts of letters from Sir Walter Scott, Mr. Roger Wilbraham, Mr. Can ning, Mrs. Leadbeater, and other eminent friends of Mr. Crabbe, now deceased, which are introduced in the following pages, have been so used with the permission of their representatives; and I have to thank the Duke of Rutland, the Marquess of Lansdowne, Earl Grey, Lord Hol land, the Right Hon. J. W. Croker, the Rev. Richard Turner, and the other living gentlemen, whose correspondence has been as serviceable to my labours as it was honourable to my father's character, for leave to avail myself of these valu able materials.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book chronicles the rise and life of a famed poet of the poor, the self-taught George Crabbe. It touches on his general life story, from his harsh childhood in a wild fishing town, his failed apprenticeships, to his efforts to make a life for himself as a doctor and a literary artist in London. Throughout the book, the reader is treated to a symphony of Crabbe's motivations and fears; his love for Sarah Elmy and their eventual marriage, his terrors of failure and destitution, his fight for acceptance in the face of poverty and ignorance. What emerges through the author's thoughtful prose is an unflinching portrait of the struggles faced by the poor and talented in 18th and 19th century England, as well as a celebration of the human spirit and the power of art.
