My dear Liddon,
You will readily believe that there are many reasons why I should gladly seize the opportunity of dedicating this volume to you, hut it will he sufficient to mention two. In the first place, it has long been my wish to put on record some acknowledgment of a friendship which has now lasted nearly twenty-five years, dating from my first undergraduate term at Oxford, and which has been to me the source of so much happiness and so many blessings. Yet what could I hope to offer of my own that would be at all worthy of your acceptance?
