In the 9th of April following, while we were yet on our journey, I found myfelfextremely weak, through the fatigue of fo long a journey, with the cold and hunger, which I had fuffered; there having fallen a frelh fnow about twenty inches deep, and we being yet three days journey from Onondaga, in a frightful wildernefs my fpirit failed, my bo dy trembled and lhook; I thought I fhould fall down and die I Ilept afide, and fat down under a tree, expecting there to die. My companions foon miffed me; the Indians came back, and found me fitting there. They remained awhile filent; at lafl, the old Indian faid, My dear companion, thou hall: hitherto encouragedus, wilt thou now quite give up? Remember that evil days are better than good days: for when we fuffer much, we do not fin; fin will be driven out of us by fulfering but good days caufe men to fin and God cannot extend his mercy to them but contrarywife, when it goeth evil with us God hath compaffion upon us. Thefe words made me alhamed; I rofe up, and travelled as well as I could.
