Inhaltsangabe

Excerpt from The History of Northumberland

HE Rev. John Hodgson intended that his great History of Northumberland' should consist of three parts. The annals of the county as a whole were to be followed by a description of the several parishes, and an appendix of original documents was to complete the work. Experience soon proved that, however just this conception of an ideal county history, the order adopted was the, exact reverse of that called for in the practical work of composition. The parochial history required to be based on the documentary, while until archives had been ransacked and localities viewed, the crowning task of writing the general history could not successfully be achieved.
