Excerpt from Results of Experiments at Rothamsted, the Growth of Leguminous Crops, for Many Years in Succession on the Same Land, Vol. 4: Being (With Additions) A Lecture Delivered November, 1, 1889, at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester
It so happens that, both the scientific interest, and the practical value, of these crops, whether as elements in rotation, or as grown in the mixed herbage of grass-land, depend very largely on the amount of nitrogen which they contain, and on the sources of their nitrogen and especially on the great differences in these respects, between them, and the representatives of the other families with which they are grown, either in alternation in our rotations, or in association in our meadows and pastures.
So much is this the case, that it is essential to a proper under standing and appreciation, of the characteristics of growth of these crops, and for the illustration of their value and importance as depending on those characteristics, to compare and to contrast the conditions and results of their growth, with those of the crops of other families.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the extensive research conducted by the author on the growth of leguminous crops, such as beans and clover, examining the conditions and results of their cultivation. The author compares and contrasts the requirements of leguminous crops with those of other plant families like cereals and root vegetables. Throughout the book, the emphasis is placed on the amount of nitrogen assimilated by the various crops and the sources of this nitrogen, especially within the context of the ongoing debate over the fixation of free nitrogen. Drawing on evidence from field experiments and other sources, the author presents a detailed analysis of the factors influencing the growth and nitrogen content of leguminous crops, providing valuable insights for farmers and researchers alike. Ultimately, this book highlights the importance of understanding the nitrogen cycle and its implications for agricultural practices and our broader understanding of plant growth.
