Excerpt from Lectures on Syphilis and on Some Forms of Local Disease: Affecting Principally the Organs of Generation
The principal object of the present work is to illus trate some of Hunter's doctrines, which the lapse of time, and the dissemination of more recent views, have obscured or caused to be forgotten. Some of these doctrines require to be modified by the light of more recent investigations; while others, which have been long neglected, will still serve as landmarks for this and for succeeding generations. Some of Pear son's views with regard to the treatment of Syphilis, which, in the author's Opinion, deserve more attention than they have lately received, are also considered.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This volume illustrates some of renowned surgeon John Hunter's theories on syphilis. Hunter, one of the most celebrated anatomists and surgeons of the 18th century, believed the blood was alive and that it contained the life force of the body, including instances of disease. The author, a leading physician and Hunterian Professor at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, aims to elucidate these ideas through the study of syphilitic blood, investigating phenomena of syphilitic infection and its transmission, including examples of blood inoculation, the disease's constitutional manifestations, and its effects on the secretions of primary and secondary syphilitic lesions. While some of Hunter's theories require modification in light of modern medicine, the author argues that many remain as valuable reference points for understanding the pathology and treatment of syphilis even today.
