Excerpt from The Purpose of Education an Examination of the Education Problem, in the Light of Recent Psychological Research
It is the object of the present work to apply this knowledge to the elucidation of educational problems, in the hope that some of the con fusions and difficulties which prevail, both in the public mind and in that of experts, may, to some extent at any rate, be cleared up. Much of the ground traversed will naturally be familiar to teachers and students of the subject; but the explanation offered of the psychical pro cesses involved in the art of pedagogy may be helpful in the endeavour of reformers to improve and systematise the somewhat chaotic methods at present in vogue.

This book argues that education should focus on the reconciliation of science, which teaches us about the environment's influence on the mind, and religion, which gives our inner states their highest form. The author explains that the human personality is not a fixed entity but rather a combination of fluid, loosely organized mental and physical elements that change constantly. He argues that the true function of education is to harmonize these elements and awaken the individual's true potential. The author draws on psychology, philosophy, and education to provide a comprehensive and thought-provoking look at the nature of human personality and the role of education in its development.
