Excerpt from Salvator

To One side of the square the café blazed prosperously, and its stridency of voices and music made a brisk discord in the majestic quiet of the night of Mozambique. All about it the fall, grave houses were shuttered and mute, as though the darkness had laid a finger on the lips of life; only in the church opposite there was a glamour of lights in the doorway, dimly shining from the altar, and where he sat by his little table in the cafe Charters could see, now and again, the shapes of those who came or went - always singly - in that shadowy entrance. A white glory of stars stood overhead, bold and wonderful; and in all the streets of the city there was a hushed and tiptoe quality, a very atmosphere of furtive caution.

At his elbow the cafe twinkled and clattered.
