Excerpt from Rev. John Alexander Roche: Autobiography and Sermons Together With the Expressions Elicited by His Death
He was like a child to him who by genius, by sanctity, or by achievements commanded his respect. With the strongest admiration for the character of the late Dr. John Hall, of New York, it is scarcely possible that the humblest. Member in that parish listened with more reverence than he to Dr. Hall's discourses. When, in 1869, this noble Irishman came to the Fifth Avenue Church, Dr. Roche instantly recognized his princely pow ers, and for several years was accustomed to attend his Sunday afternoon services.

This book is, in essence, three things; a tribute to a great Methodist minister and scholar, a revealing autobiography of the author, and a thought-provoking exploration of the meaning of genuine religious devotion. John Alexander Roche (1813-1894) began his ministry in Smyrna, Delaware, in 1829 amid the fervour of a great revival. His life's journey would take him to important pulpits in Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and New York City and to the presidency of Drew Theological Seminary, where he taught for 36 years. In this book, Roche provides delightful insights into the 'Old School' Methodism of his youth, and thoughtful personal reflections on the value of books, the power of sermons, and the centrality of faith.
