In the following sketches an endeavour has been made to give an impression of the personality of each author in the course of a succinct biographical narrative, - to disentangle the man himself from the mass of biographical detail that surrounds him.
With the exception of the Shakespeare autograph, the facsimiles are all reproduced from MSS. preserved in the British Museum. Of these the greater number have already appeared in the series of Facsimiles of Royal, Historical, Literary and other Autographs in the Department of MSS., British Museum, published by order of the Trustees, to whose courtesy the author is indebted for permission to reproduce them in the present volume.
