Excerpt from Along the Rio Grande
To gather material for this book the author wan dered in July and August, 1916, along the Rio Grande as a warless war correspondent. Disappointed in the absence of sanguinary battles, he turned his attention to the less bloodthirsty inhabitants and the country in which they lived, and felt it had been worth the journey.
What he has said concerning them was written hastily from day to day for the New York Morning Tele graph, to which he is indebted for the permission to reprint it.
He does not offer this book for literary merits, nor has he any message to convey. For this he apologizes. He has described conditions only as he found them and persons whom he has met, without coloring to suit a purpose.
