Excerpt from The Doctrine of Development and Conscience Considered in Relation to the Evidences of Christianity and of the Catholic System
In addition to this, the space which is afforded to the discussion of so wide a question, forms no unim portant consideration, and must exercise a material influence on the character of the inquiry.
These circumstances will convey some notion of the grounds on which it is hoped, that the present work may not be regarded as superfluous by, at least, some portion of the Church. But there are other considerations, of a more general nature, which have influenced the Author in his undertaking, and which he will proceed to explain.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the concept of 'Development' as put forth by proponents of a historicist approach to human thought and belief. In particular, the author questions the compatibility of such theories with either genuine Christianity or rationalism. The author draws upon early Christian writings to argue that the integrity and truth of Christian belief has always been understood to be grounded in historical evidences, not in ongoing speculative development. The author further argues that the claims of 'Development' theories to be distinct from rationalism are unfounded. This work concludes by demonstrating the compatibility of Christian belief with rational inquiry and refuting the notion that Roman Catholic beliefs, practices, and doctrines are justified by a 'Development' of Christianity over time. This is an essential text for scholars and students of philosophy and religion, as well as anyone interested in the relationship between faith and reason.
