Spanning a period of nearly twenty years, the oflicial career of Augustus Caesar Dodge is em braced in his record as Register of the United States Land Office, Delegate to Congress, Unit ed States Senator, and Minister at the Court of Madrid. Twelve years of this official tenure reflects the history of Iowa in Congress.
Augustus Caesar Dodge beheld the popula tion of Iowa grow from twenty-two thousand to over one and one-half millions; he was identi fied with the disposal of Iowa's public domain and its purchase from the Indian tribes; he was Iowa's Delegate in Congress during the transi tion from Territory to State; and as the medi um between the Territory and Congress he was entrusted with problems of appropriations, the public domain, and boundaries. As dean of the Iowa delegation in Congress he was foremost in the discussion of the issues of slavery; while his career at the Court of Madrid is a link in the long chain of diplomatic negotiations for the Pearl of the Antilles.
