On undertaking this work the Author proposed to himself to furnish the Profession with a Text-Book, which should contain a moderately extended view of the Elements of Obstetric Medicine, together with references to the best authorities, for the facts upon which have been founded both its Theory and Practice. How far he has succeeded in carrying these purposes into effect, he must leave the well-informed reader to determine. It may be proper to remark, that the materials of which these volumes are composed are the accumulation of many years, the result of knowledge acquired both by extensive practice and by almost exclusive reading on the subject of the work. The References to Cases and other forms of Illustration may appear so numerous as to suggest a suspicion that a sufficiently severe discrimination had not been resorted to in their selection.
