Excerpt from Through the Iron Bars: Two Years of German Occupation in Belgium
The English-speaking public is generally well informed concerning the part played in the war by the Belgian troops. The resistance of our small field army at Liege, before Antwerp, and on the Yser has been praised and is still being praised wherever the tale runs. This is easy enough to understand. The fact that those men should have been able to hold so long in check the forces of the first military Empire in Europe, and that a great number of them, helped by new contingents of recruits and led by their young King, should still be fighting on their native soil, must appeal strongly to the imagination.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book chronicles the German occupation of Belgium during the first two years of the First World War, through insightful anecdotes and personal accounts. The first wave of German invasion caused many civilian deaths, and the subsequent occupation primarily involved two aims: to suppress all expressions of Belgian patriotism, and to economically cripple the country. The author focuses on the second year of occupation, when the Germans, seeing no prospect of outright annexation, decided to systematically loot Belgium of all resources to support their war machine. Despite the deprivations and suppression, the Belgian people showed remarkable courage and resilience in their resistance, preserving a stout heart and a commitment to their King and country. As well as offering a different perspective on the First World War, this book provides a fascinating and sometimes harrowing insight into the dark heart of twentieth-century fascism.
