Excerpt from An Address Delivered Before the Philoclean and Peithessopian Societies of Rutgers College
In executing the responsible office here assigned me, the time will not allow me to indulge in any wide range of observation; but I shall attempt to follow such a course of remark, while calling your attention to one principal topic, as may enable me to impress you, as far as my poor ability will go, with some ge neral principles, and such an order and train of thought and reflection, as may stand you in good stead in hours of casual need, and, in some degree, supply the place and meet the want of more particu lar and minute directions. Only, I beg of you, do not expect too much from me. An honest effort in your behalf, and which shall at the same time be an honest effort in behalf of society and of our common country, is all that I can promise; for the ability which shall characterize it, I can only furnish it in that humble measure according to which it hath pleased God to endow me with it.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book cautions against the potential pitfalls of the budding democracy in the United States. Borne from a series of addresses to the literary societies of Rutgers College in 1837, the author illuminates the potential drawbacks of the period's political philosophy, including rampant populism, and the dangers of blindly trusting in the wisdom of the masses. The author argues that democratic principles must be supported by a strong foundation of ethics and virtue, and advocates for the educated class to rise as beacons of enlightenment to guide the nation through its political development. The author's frank examination of democratic ideals at a critical junction in American history is as relevant today as it was nearly two centuries ago.
