The general impression that a group of southern politicians dominated the Convention of 1 849 is contrary to fact as may be seen. The extensive eastern boundary was not sup ported by southern men any more than by northern, and the exclusion of the free negro was a question in which the man from the northern states was interested as much as the man from the South. The State Legislature, however, did finally send two proslavery men to represent California in the Senate of the United States.
