In the first part of the study which undertakes to set forth the existing conditions with respect to the variability of standards among teachers, my main task has been to summarize and eval uate the work of former students of the subject. I have found it necessary in many cases to give the results of earlier studies in the form of tables which the authors have used to summarize their findings.
