Potter (dr. John) archbifhop of Canterbury, and a very learned man, was fon of mr.'thomas Potter, 3 linnen-draper at Wakefield in Yorkfhire: where he was born about 1674. Being put to fchool there, he made an uncommon progrefs in the Greek tongue; and at fourteen years of age, was fent to Univerfity-college in Oxford. At nineteen, hepubliihed Variantes Leétiones notaekzid'plu tarchi librum de audiendis poetis; 85 ad Bafilii magni ora tionem'ad Juvenes, quomodo cum fruélu legere pofiint Grae corum libro's, 8v0. The year after, he was chofen fellow of Lincoln college; and, proceeding mailer of arts, he took pupils, and went into orders. In 1697, came out his edition of Lycophron in folio: it was reprinted in 1702, and is reckoned the beft of that obfcure writer. The flame year, 1697, he publifhed likewife the firftwolume of his Antiquities of Greece which was followed by the fe cond, the year after. Several additions were made by him in the fubfequent editions of this'ufeful and learned work, of which the feventh edition was publifhed in 1751.
