Words, Facts, and Phrases. Much information pertaining to our red-letter Days may be gleaned, amid a mass of other data, from Chambers's Book of Days but this fruitful subject is only partially treated therein. Political nomenclature must also be sought for in divers channels and not until one has essayed to run to earth some apparently self-explanatory phrase does it become apparent how little has been done to catalogue such matters. The interesting sub icot of Geographical N icknames is nowhere else treated at the length it deserves. Contractions and Abbreviations, and Foreign Words and Phrases, may be found appended to any good dictionary; but in no case, it is believed, have these ever been set forth so fully as in the present instance. It will be admitted that there is a distinct advantage in having all these matters grouped under one alphabet.
