Excerpt from The Infallibility of the Church: A Course of Lectures Delivered in the Divinity School of the University of Dublin

Roman Church is at present disposed, there can be no union with her except on the terms of absolute submission; that submission, moreover, involving an acknowledgment that we from our hearts believe things to be true which we have good reasons for knowing to be false. The nature Of the claims of Rome' clearly shuts out that possibility of recon ciliation in her case which may be hoped for in other cases from retractations or mutual explanations; so that, by every effort to bring about the withdrawal of these Claims, we are doing something to remove the main Obstacle to the reunion of Christendom.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into a long-standing debate: the Catholic Church's claim to infallibility. Written by a scholar who grappled with this controversy throughout his career, this work explores the historical and theological arguments surrounding the Church of Romeââ â¢s assertion that it cannot err. The author presents a compelling case, drawing upon the writings of early Church Fathers and theologians as well as the historical record, to challenge the Roman Catholic view of its own authority. The book examines the complexities of private judgment and its relation to infallible authority, exploring the claim that submission to Rome is itself an act of private judgment. The author also analyzes the development of the doctrine of infallibility, tracing its evolution from early understandings of the Churchââ â¢s authority to the formal definition of Papal infallibility by the Vatican Council. This book is a valuable resource for anyone seeking to understand the ongoing debate about the nature of the Church and its authority. Through the lens of history and scripture, the author offers a nuanced and compelling perspective on a key issue in Christian thought, revealing the inherent contradictions and inconsistencies within the Roman Catholic claim to infallibility.
