Mrs. Smyth was a bright and ready scholar in the common schools of her native district, at that time thor oughly good so far as they went, and in the town high school, usually taught by college graduates. She took an after-course in a young ladies' seminary at Charles town, Mass, and was for several terms thereafter a teacher in Manchester and in other places, and in this capacity she was as highly appreciated and as much beloved in the days of her youth as in after-times and in wider spheres.
