Excerpt from An Introduction to Protestant Dogmatics
Has the most rigid bonds of relationship and union with the social and philosophical ideas of his time. The function of the theological semi nary is not to make Christians, but to put the Christian possession of prospective ministers in such form that there will be no barrier between the minister and the educated man of his time. Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book introduces Protestant dogmatics by examining the origin, nature, and function of dogma within Protestantism. The author traces the evolution of the term 'dogma' from its classical Greek roots through its usage in the Bible and in church history, arguing that the traditional understanding of dogma as an infallible belief decreed by an authoritative church is incompatible with the Protestant principle of religious liberty. The author proposes a new definition of dogma as the scientific expression of the faith of the Protestant church at a given time, emphasizing the role of dogma in the spiritual welfare of the church, its importance for apologetics and polemics, and its provisional and revisable nature.
