This book is a statistical analysis by Elias Peissner attempting to prove that the differences between free and slave states are due to the presence of slavery. The author argues that immigration is a more important factor in the growth and prosperity of the Northern states than slavery is in the decline of the Southern states. The author presents numerous tables showing the proportions of immigrants in different states, both free and slave, and demonstrates that the Northern states have a much higher proportion of immigrants. The author concludes that this is because slavery makes the South less attractive to immigrants, and that the South's economic problems are due to its reliance on slavery rather than to any inherent inferiority of the region.
