In entering upon a subject of such importance and extent as the one before me, and having to condense it into the small compass of a couple of lectures, it will be almost impossible to avoid making the mistake of leaving out of view some things which should be noticed however, it will be my care to crowd as much within the narrow limit as possible, and to make such selections as will best answer the ends proposed.
