Though deeply sensible of the honour conferred on me, by your invitation to occupy, for a brief time, this place on this occasion, I must be permitted to express regret at my inability to fulfil expectations which may reason ably have been cherished in view of the annual assem blage of the members and friends of this association; and, especially, that the gentleman56 to whom this invita tion was first extended, so esteemed for his virtues, and admired for his eloquence, found it necessary to decline the duty, which the speaker, relying upon your gene rous indulgence, will attempt, however inadequately, to perform.
