The author analyzes the ensuing debate over whether the executive power should be vested in a single regent or a council of regency, considering the precedents, constitutional principles, and potential consequences of each option. The book explores the political landscape of the time, discussing the roles of key figures and factions, as well as the broader implications for the monarchy and the governance of Britain. By examining the arguments and motivations behind the two proposed regency options, the author provides insights into the delicate balance between monarchical authority, ministerial responsibility, and the role of Parliament in times of crisis. Ultimately, the book sheds light on the importance of safeguarding constitutional principles and ensuring the stability of the British government during a period of uncertainty and political turmoil.
