Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book gives a detailed history of education within the state of Rhode Island. The author begins by comparing the unique settlement of the state and its effects on its educational development and how it differed from other states founded around the same time. Then the author addresses the circumstances that impacted the absence of educational opportunities for the people of the state, such as religious hostility toward education and the effect of slavery on education. The author also includes the political instability of the state, due to border disputes, and how it contributed to the delay of establishing an education system. Furthermore, the author goes into detail about the transformative effects of the Revolutionary War on Rhode Island's economy and how that economy contributed to the educational advancement of the state. An examination of the history of education in other states is also incorporated into the author's arguments about where and how Rhode Island's education fell behind or surpassed other surrounding states in its region. The author provides insightful commentary on how the educational history of the state should inform the future of education and social equality in the state.
